Mary Louise Morris was born to Mary Etta Swindell McNairy and Edward Isaac Swindell on March 8th, 1939 in Kansas City, Missouri. After her parents divorced, in 1946, Mary moved to Chicago, Illinois and lived in a musical household where her mother and aunt taught her voice control and piano. Mary continued to live in Chicago until 1950 where her mother and aunt decided to move to Detroit Michigan in hopes for better opportunities for their musical group’s success. As Mary became a teenager, she began to sing with a Religious Choir Group called the Victorettes. The Victorettes was a group formed by Mary’s mother and her Aunt Jeanette Sims. The Victorettes became popular in Detroit, Michigan appearing at local churches and other arenas throughout the state of Michigan and numerous other Midwestern, Northern and Southern States, and were featured weekly on the Sunday Morning “Southland Spirituals” radio broadcast on WJLB Detroit. Mary continued to sing with the Victorettes until her graduation from Pershing High School in 1957. Mary graduated from Pershing High School in Detroit, Michigan with a general education degree. After high school, she attended Lewis Business College in 1957 and graduated with an Office Administration Degree. Mary attended; West Los Angeles College, Harbor College, and Redlands University and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. In 1989. Shortly after attending Lewis Business College, Mary acquired her first full time job at Shefford's Jewelers in Detroit, Michigan. Mary continued to work at Shefford’s until she married Dwight Arthur Morris and moved to Los Angeles, CA in November, 1961. In Los Angeles, Mary applied for work at Los Angeles Community College District and in July 1961 was hired as a Clerk Typist at L.A. Trade-Tech College. Mary worked her way up the career ladder for 41 years with the LACCD, retiring on November 1, 2002 with many accomplishments as a Matriculation Coordinator at Southwest Los Angeles Community College. In 2005 after living in California for forty four years, Mary and Dwight moved to Arizona to live closer to their daughter and their grandchildren. After living in Arizona for four short years, Dwight passed away in his home in Surprise, AZ on May 23rd, 2009. Two weeks after Dwight’s passing, Mary moved to Little Elm, TX where her daughter, son in law and grandchildren currently lived (They left Arizona for a job opportunity in Texas.) In her younger days, Mary was quite an accomplished bowler. She would bowl on a team once a week after work and acquired bowling trophies and plaques for high scores and good games. She was very proud of her trophies. After Mary retired, she became quite a TV connoisseur. She loved to watch shows like 100,000 Pyramid, Family Feud, and judge shows especially Judge Judy. Her favorite shows were Becker and Frasier. Mary also loved to read romance novels. She would sit outside on the backyard patio with a Coke and read her book almost everyday. Mary departed this life for a better one on Monday, November 28th, 2011 at Centennial Hospital in Frisco, TX after a short battle with breast cancer. She is survived by, her son, Darren Morris of Los Angeles CA, daughter, Cynthea Magana, Son-in-law Ezequiel Magana, Grandchildren Lauren and Kyle Magana and Grandpuppies, Lakota, Midnight, Beethoven and Grandkitty Mario of Little Elm, TX; brother and sister in law, Garfield and Linda Morris of Knoxville, TN; sister in law Joyce Harper, of Knoxville, TN, brother in law Michael Morris from Los Angeles, CA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A Memorial Service will be held for Mary at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Frisco, Texas.
