IN LOVING MEMORY

Mary (Mickey) Elizabeth Shero

Mar 11 1920 - Jan 12 2015

Mary (Mickey) Elizabeth Shero of McKinney, Texas, peacefully passed away on January 12, 2015, at the age of 94. Mickey, as always, remained an independent, determined, funny, and high-spirited person through the end of her life.

Mickey was born March 11, 1920, to James and Florene (Triest) Lockwood in Chicago, Illinois, and attended Catholic grammar and high schools in the city. During WWII, Mickey met Arch R. Shero at a USO dance, and, following the end of the war, married the handsome sailor on January 24, 1945. Soon after their marriage, they embarked on what they believed would be a 5 year commitment. Instead, they launched 40 years of high adventure of living abroad.

While Arch toiled away in the oilfields of western Venezuela, Mickey rose to the challenges of “ex-pat” living in an oil-camp environment by learning to play bridge, golf, volunteering at various charity organizations, publishing the camp weekly news bulletin, developing a self-styled patois of Spanglish, and raising six beautiful children.

Although cherishing the time the Shero family spent in Venezuela, Mickey indisputably found herself in heaven-on-earth during the last 10 years of living abroad: Arch’s assignments relocated them to London, Aberdeen, and Madrid! Yes, Arch continued to go to work every day while Mickey shopped antique stores, china and crystal shops, savored high tea, always stopped for scones at country inns, toured Europe with the American Women’s Club, and simply had FUN!

After being away from the USA for so many years, it was long over due to come home and set down American roots. Mickey and Arch lived in Rowlett and were active members in the Community of Sacred Heart Catholic Church before Arch became diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. As Arch’s condition declined, he was relocated to the Memory Care Center in McKinney. On Arch’s death, Mickey moved to McKinney, Texas, and became an active member of St. Michael Church of McKinney. Due to a decline in her health last April, Mickey and her children agreed that she move her residence to The Villa Asuncion at Princeton, Texas. Mickey was welcomed and quickly fit in to the organization’s routine. As the dementia disease took over, While at The Villa, she fell several times, one fall serious enough to require hip surgery and rehab. Ever the intrepid Mickey, she was determined to keep going until at last her heart gave out to congestive heart failure.

While at the Villa there were many people who were constantly there for Mickey. With deepest, warmest appreciation, we thank all of you for caring for our beloved Mickey throughout the last six-months the last months of her life. She flourished under your kindness, particularly loving the special delivery of snacks, dinners, and most assuredly, the late night ice cream with caramel topping!

She is survived by her six children: Lee, Arch Wray, Susan, Leslie, Jane, and Winston, and their spouses, eleven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother James Lockwood of Clear Lake, Texas.

A funeral Mass will be held Monday, January 19, 2015, at 10:00 AM, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 411 Paula Road, McKinney, Texas. Interment will follow at Center Point Cemetery in Wilburton, Oklahoma, at 3:30 PM. The family will receive friends and family during a visitation & rosary on Sunday evening from 7PM-9PM at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen, Texas.
