Marthell Lilly Kirkman

Marthell Lilly Kirkman, 84, passed away peacefully at home in Carrollton,   Texas on October 12, 2013. She was born on June 21, 1929 in Greenville, Texas to Herbert and Elizabeth (Banta) Lilly. She graduated from Greenville High School in 1946 and on January 27, 1951, married the love of her life, Dr. Marvin “Sport” Kirkman. They lived together in many Texas towns including Kingsville, Quinlan, Commerce, Cuero, Plano and Port Lavaca before retiring back home in Greenville.

Marthell was a kind, thoughtful and generous person. She was the thread that bound the family together and was loved and respected by all. She was an exceptional cook who enjoyed gathering her friends and family for any occasion. Marthell held various jobs throughout her life but the one most fondly remembered was the 15 years she served as secretary to the principal at Jefferson Elementary School in Port Lavaca, Texas. She also served in many civic, church and charitable organizations and was a life-time member of the PTA.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Herbert Maurice Lilly, a sister, Elizabeth Kay Carroll, her parents and husband. She is survived by her children Terri, Kent, Keith and wife Anne; grandchildren Taylor, Zachary and Brianna; several nieces, nephews and extended family. She was especially grateful to her nephew, Jeff Doerr, for the exceptional care he provided during the last months of her life. Marthell had a long life full of love, joy and happiness. It was a life well lived. Her kind spirit, laughter, grace and positive outlook will be greatly missed.

A graveside service will be held at Memoryland Memorial Park in Greenville on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the SPCA or charity of choice.
