Martha Jean Bullock Everett

Martha Jean Bullock Everett was born in February 1931 to Willie R. Harmon and William Joel Bullock. She was raised in Rule, TX. Jean was very athletic and a member of the basketball team and often rode her bike throughout town. On these rides, she met many people and developed her life-long skill of making friends easily.

After graduating from Rule High School in 1947 at 16 years old, she enrolled in Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, TX. In 1948, she and her sister, Betty Ann Bullock Smith transferred to the University of Texas in Austin. Jean graduated in 1951 with a BS degree in elementary education. As a University co-ed, Jean enjoyed the college life and met her future husband, Dr. Richard H. Everett, Jr.

After her graduation, Jean taught elementary education in Belton, San Angelo, and Austin, Texas. After Richard returned from his tour in the Korean War, they were married in December 1953. They settled in Austin, TX where she taught school and they started their family, first with a Weimaraner named Bruno and then a son in 1957 - Richard H. Everett, III. In 1959, the family moved to Houston, TX while Richard completed his periodontal residency. In 1960, Richard joined the US Air Force and Jean began her 28-year military life and added a daughter, Barbara J. Everett, to their growing family.

Jean managed over 32 household moves across Texas and the world. She lived in Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Wichita Falls, Philippines Islands, Shreveport, LA, Honolulu, HI, Austin, TX, Abilene, TX, Highland Haven, TX, Austin, TX and finally Dallas, TX. In all these places, Jean was very active in Women’s Tennis Clubs and often the champion. She was very active and was an officer in the Officer Wives’ Club and hosted numerous teas and parties. She loved a party and hosted many throughout her years. She was also a member of bridge, garden, sewing, and arts and craft clubs everywhere they lived. Additionally, she found time to be a Super Mom, being a teacher, homeroom mother, little-league mom, Girl Scout cookie chairman, swim team mother. She was an excellent seamstress and made many beautiful clothes for her daughter. Her energy was limitless.

After they retired from the military in 1974, Jean and Richard moved to Austin and then Abilene, TX. In Abilene, she became a realtor and a rural postal carrier. They moved to Highland Haven, TX in 1990, where she was the Secretary of the town of Highland Haven, as well as very active the garden, sewing, arts and crafts, and community clubs.

After the death of her husband in 1997, Jean moved to Austin, TX where she again was very active in her community board, teaching computer classes at the senior citizen’s center, and bridge clubs. In 2008, Jean moved to Dallas, TX to be near her son and his family. She loved her grandchildren and was an avid fan of their sports endeavors. She was very proud mother and grandmother and kept her friends abreast of their activities and accomplishments. Jean passed away on December 10, 2012. Through all the years, she maintained a great sense of humor and wit, rarely complained, and had a positive attitude until the end.

Jean is survived by her sister, Betty Ann Smith of Austin, TX, her son, Richard H. Everett, III and his wife Theresa and three grandchildren, Richard H. Everett, IV, William Clay Everett, and Katherine Jean Everett of Plano, TX, and her daughter Barbara Everett and her husband Robert Hindman of Albuquerque, NM.

Memorial Services will be held in the Living Room of Highland Springs Retirement Community, 8020 Frankford Rd, Dallas, TX 75202 on Monday, December 17, 2012 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to the Wounded Warriors Project.
