Maj. Dee Elmo Rust (Ret. U.S. Air Force) passed away Sept. 8, 2011 after a long illness. He lived in Fairview, Texas and is survived by his wife, Gayle Bridges Rust; daughters, Susan Locascio of Prospect Heights, Illinois, Christina Russell-Jones and husband Christopher of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; sons, Randal Thomas Rust and fiancée Christi Swanner of Dallas, Texas, Bob SoRelle and wife Jan of Citrus Heights, California; sister, Martha Burleson of Kerrville, Texas; granddaughters Rebekah Furber and Diana SoRelle; grandsons Robert Furber and wife Sarah, and James Furber; and four great grandchildren, Ash, Justus, Jackson and Kiley Furber. Dee Elmo was preceded in death by his parents Basil Elmo and Emma Errington Rust, along with his sisters Margie Moore, Norma Strickland and Marcia Hammond. He grew up in Crane, Texas and graduated from Crane High School in 1949. He lettered four years of high school football. His senior year he was team captain and president of the Crane High School student council. He attended Texas A&M University (Class of ’53) from 1949-1952 when military service interrupted. He later graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in Petroleum Engineering and Military Science. Dee Elmo had an accomplished military career with active combat duties in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He graduated from pilot training at Reese Air Force Base (Texas) in 1954, and from the Squadron Officers School at Maxwell AFB (Alabama) in 1958. He spent 20 years in the United States Air Force where he served in the 8th Bomb Squadron in Kunsan, Korea while stationed in Japan. He was a Special Air Operations Advisor to the Turkish Army General Staff in Ankara, Turkey and served as a Forward Air Controller and Executive Officer in the 23rd Tactical Air Support Squadron based out of Nakhon Phanom, Thailand. In 1971 he was assigned to the 4638 Support Squadron as the personal pilot for the Commanding General of the 20th Air Division. He was also a Command Pilot, instructor and flight examiner. After retiring from active duty in 1973, he settled with his family in Midland, Texas. He founded Ace Tank, a company specializing in well completion equipment and installation for the oil industry. After retiring, he and Gayle moved to Knoxville, Tennessee then Ocala, Florida before finally returning to Dallas, making lifelong friends along the way. Dee Elmo was a devout Methodist and was listed in Who's Who of Methodist Laymen. He enjoyed reading, aviation, military history, golf and spending time with family and friends. Dee Elmo led his life with dignity and pride, and touched many lives with his laughter, loyalty, love and support. He will be deeply missed. We would like to thank the staff at Atria in Richardson, TX and at Prestonwood Rehabilitation and Hospice Plus in Plano, TX along with Clovis Williams, his private nurse, for their incredible care and concern. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 14, 2011, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel in Allen, Texas. The family will receive friends during a visitation from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Thursday evening at the funeral home.
