Lawrence A. "Larry" Engels

Lawrence A. “Larry” Engels died August 3, 2012, in Dallas, Texas at the age of 78. He was born September 26, 1933 in Darlington, Wisconsin, the son of Henry M. and Nell E. (O’Connor) Engels. He graduated from Darlington High School in 1951 and joined the U.S. Navy in March 1952, during the Korean War. After receiving an Honorable Discharge from the U. S. Navy in 1955, he earned a BBA degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1959. Larry and Marilyn R. Stellick were married at Blessed Sacrament Church in La Crosse, WI on September 6, 1958 just before they both began their senior year at the University of Wisconsin.  Larry also earned an MBA degree from Northwestern University in 1970.

Larry started his business career in 1959 with U.S. Steel Corporation in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1964 he was transferred to the U.S. Steel Corporation Office in Chicago, Illinois. In 1969 he was employed by National Can Corporation in Chicago.  In 1977 he joined Commercial Metals Company in Dallas Texas. In 1999, after twenty-two years with Commercial Metals Company, he retired as Vice President-Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer.

Survivors include Larry’s wife of 53 years, Marilyn; their four children, Laurie L. (James W.) Dawson, Michael L. (Lisa K.) Engels, Stephen M. (Gail O.) Engels, all residents of Plano, TX, and Thomas M. (Julia M.) Engels, San Jose, CA; five grandchildren, Brian J. (Rosemary G.) Hudson, Grand Prairie, TX, Christopher M. (Megan S.) Engels, Houston, TX, James H. Engels, Austin, TX, Robert L. Engels and Matthew S. Engels, Plano, TX; and one great grandchild, Audrey S. Hudson, Grand Prairie, TX. Larry was preceded in death by his father in 1960, his mother in 1990 and three brothers, Donald H. Engels M.D. in 2000, Paul E. Engels in 1972 and Robert J. Engels in 1986.

Larry loved God, his wife Marilyn, their family and the United States of America. Larry was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1955 and was Honorably Discharged as a Second Class Petty Officer after serving with the Seventh Fleet in the South China Sea aboard the aircraft carrier USS Philippine Sea (CVA-47). Larry enjoyed traveling with his wife Marilyn and they traveled the world together. He was a lifetime member of The USS Philippine Sea Association, a member of The American Legion, a past member of the Financial Executives Institute and a past member of the National Association of Treasurers.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am, Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Plano. A private family graveside service will be held at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow, Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen, TX.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2700 W. Spring Creek Parkway, Plano, TX 75023, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, or the charity of your choice.
