Kathryn Waltz Bryant

Kathryn Waltz Bryant was born February 10, 1921 in Denison, Texas to Frank and Mildred Waltz. She passed away on April 5, 2017 at her home in Whitewright. She was 96 years of age.

Kay graduated Denison High School in 1937 at 17 years of age. She entered Texas Women’s University in 1938 and worked in the school library under a W.P.A. program and finished her degree at T.W.U.

Kay taught at Peabody Elementary in Denison, Texas but was asked to join the Corps of Engineers as a draftswoman in the war effort in World War II. Part of the work was drafting work for Lake Texoma. She then moved to Denver, Colorado during WWII to work at Lawry Field in the war effort.

Kay married James C. Bryant on January 9, 1947 in Denver, Colorado. They were married until his death in 1993. They resided in and near Whitewright from October 1947 until present.

Kathryn lived a life of exemplary service to her family, friends, community and society. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Whitewright from 1947 to present and taught Sunday School for 35 years. She was a member of the Church Board for many years as well. She also served on the Grayson County Child Welfare Board for many years with Judge Vaughn and others.

Kay was also a member of the Friday Literary Club since 1948. In the late 1960’s Kay spearheaded the establishment of the Whitewright Public Library as a member of the Literary Club. She worked in the library for 30 years on a mostly voluntary basis. In 1997 she was honored by a resolution issued by the Texas House of Representatives for effort in the Library Service System.

Kay and James had 3 sons, Anthony Murry Bryant (deceased), Frank Randolph Bryant, and James Columbus Bryant, Jr. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, April 10, 2017 at 11:00am at the First United Methodist Church in Whitewright. Officiating the service will be Rev. Bill McFatridge and Rev. Allen Snider. Pallbearers will be Larry Deeds, David Woodson, Jonathan Bryant, James Bryant, James Scott, and Daniel Brinkley. Honorary Pallbearer is C.B. Bryant. A private committal service will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Whitewright.
