Katherine Ann "Becky" Beckman Winniford

Katherine Ann (“Becky”) Beckman Winniford, age 86, of McKinney, Texas died February 26, 2007 in Allen, Texas. Katherine Ann Beckman was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas on January 30, 1921 to Fred and Alpha (Curtis) Beckman. She was married to Charles E. Winniford, Jr., who preceded her in death. Mrs. Winniford’s was a life of service and leadership to her country, church, city and family. She graduated from Muskogee High School in 1938, and from the University of Oklahoma in 1942, followed by a civilian postgraduate dietetic internship at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC. She was commissioned into the Army and volunteered for overseas duty in the Women’s Medical Specialists Corp, serving posts in the U.S., India and China, and was discharged at the rank of 1st Lt. While working as a Registered Dietitian at Baylor Hospital in Dallas after WWII, she met coworker and pharmacist Charles E. Winniford, Jr. They married January 31, 1948 in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and settled in McKinney, Texas, where they raised three daughters and remained lifelong residents. Mrs. Winniford was active in family, church and civic life. She served as Camp Fire Girls Horizon Club leader for her daughters. A lifelong church volunteer, she was an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church. Her love of gardening led to her many years of service on the McKinney Park Board, which named a park in her honor. She was also a leader in the Heritage Guild of Collin County. Mrs. Winniford is survived by three daughters, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren; daughters Katherine Ann Winniford, Dallas, TX; Julia Horne, Austin, TX; Sarah Abraham, Garner, NC; grandchildren Laura Williamson Jorgeson, Katherine Williamson Cochran, Claire Parsons, Joseph Parsons, Julia Ohlweiler, Audra Ohlweiler, James Ohlweiler; great granddaughters Claire and Katherine Ann Cochran. Mrs. Winniford is also survived by her sister Julia Cain, Oklahoma City, and brother William E. Beckman, Muskogee, OK. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 3, 2007, at First Presbyterian Church, 2000 W. White Ave., McKinney, TX. A commital service will take place at 3:00 PM, Saturday, at Edgewood Cemetery, Lancaster, Texas. Family and friends are invited to the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen, Texas at their convenience on Thursday to pay their respects and to sign the register book. The family will receive friends during a visitation on Thursday evening beginning at 6:30 PM. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Heritage Guild of Collin County, or the McKinney Education Foundation.
