Joyce Archer Hicks

Joyce Archer Hicks, daughter of Roy Virgil Archer and Etna Lillian Carrell, was born November 14, 1930, in Crowell, Foard County, Texas, and departed this life May 30, 2004 in Pottsboro, Grayson County, Texas after a 2 year fight with cancer. Joyce spent her childhood in Crowell and McKinney, Texas where she attended high school. On December 20, 1947, she was united in marriage in McKinney to Robert Lendy “Buster” Hicks. Buster, son of Robert Ramer Hicks and Lillian Covella McPeak was a resident of Anna, Texas. Sadly, their marriage ended in divorce in 1974. While her children were in school, Joyce worked for Anderson Clayton and Austin College in Sherman. Before retiring in 1985, she was a Property Manager for Mr. and Mrs. Sam Lett in Dallas for over ten years. A loving mother, Joyce’s life was centered on her children. She leaves her daughters, Patricia Diane “Patty” Macsisak (Mrs. Stephen Foster Macsisak) of Plano, Dorothy Lynn “Dottie” Boatman (Mrs. Ralph A. Boatman) of Nacogdoches, and Judy Kay Smith-Ward (Mrs. Gerald W. Ward) of Pottsboro. Her grandchildren include Robert Bradley Boatman of Plano, Tara Beth Boatman of Nacogdoches, Daryl Jay Smith and wife Adawn of Greer, South Carolina, and Joel Bryan Smith of San Jose, California. Her step-grandchildren include Cynthia Kay Davis (Mrs. David W. Davis) of Stephenville, Vickie Lynn Boatman of Nacogdoches, and Ralph Randall Boatman and wife Connie of San Antonio and their families. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Carrell Vaughn Archer and James Kenneth Archer; and her sister, Zeta Laverne Archer Self. She will be greatly missed by her family and dear friends. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at the Walnut Grove Cemetery, near McKinney. Joyce was a descendent of early Collin County settlers, including the Ball, Striplin, and Griffin families, who came from Jefferson and Cocke County, Tennessee. She is the fourth generation of her family to be interred at the historic cemetery and she will rest next to her parents and brother, Carrell Vaughn. Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial to the Local History and Genealogy Center, McKinney Memorial Public Library, 101 E. Hunt Street, McKinney, TX 75069 or the Lakeway United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 240, Pottsboro, Texas 75076.
