John Lindol Sprague

John Lindol Sprague of Allen, TX passed away suddenly June 14, 2015 at the age of 68. He was born June 15, 1946 to James Frederick Sprague and Lucy (Waters) Sprague in Syracuse, NY. 

John graduated with a B.A. in Philosophy in 1968 from Laval University in Quebec City, Canada, after which he spent two years in Rome, Italy, studying theology, scripture, and languages. He achieved a Masters in Theology and was ordained a deacon through the diaconate program at Catholic Theological Union, in Hyde Park, Chicago, IL, on June 4, 1971. John’s lifelong career as editor and publisher began at The Thomas More Association in Chicago, IL where, in time, he was elected President. Later RCL Enterprises in Allen, TX acquired the TMA book publishing division where he was named Editorial Director/Publisher. After 32 years with Thomas More he established John Sprague Editorial in 2004, his freelance editorial business.

John was actively involved with many volunteer organizations in the local community including the Allen Sunrise Rotary Club, Foundation for Allen Schools, and Allen Public Safety Recovery Fund. He spoke 4 languages, enjoyed word puzzles, traveling, movies, and was an avid reader. John also was an ardent gardener and delighted in spending time outdoors whether on his daily walks or on hikes with his family. His grandchildren were a great source of joy in his life and he relished being with them as their Pop-Pop.

John is survived by his wife of 43 years, Patricia A. (Gallagher) Sprague of Allen, TX; his son, Christopher R. (Rebecca) Sprague of Norwich, NY; his son Stephen D. (Cynthia) Sprague of Dallas, TX; his daughter, Mary Colette (Drew) Stanley of Dallas, TX; grandchildren, Estella, James, Daniel, and Samuel; brothers, James Sprague of Watertown, NY and Joseph Sprague of Moore, SC; sisters, Susan Sprague of Watertown, NY, Lucyann Ormiston of Rochester, NY, and Martha Grant of Rochester, NY; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, George L. Sprague.

Please join us for a memorial service at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen, TX on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. A memorial liturgy will be held by his family in New York State later this summer.
