John Harold Sommers, Jr.

John Harold Sommers, Jr., age 60, of McKinney, Texas, passed away November 27, 2009, in McKinney. John was born March 9, 1949, in Long Prairie, Minnesota, to John Harold and Virginia (Carlson) Sommers, Sr. He grew up in Fridley, Minnesota where he attended high school and college. John proudly served as a medic in the United States Army as a member of the 418th Medical Company during the Vietnam Conflict. He was honorably discharged and awarded the bronze star for his service. John moved to Texas in 1979 where he began his own business, Melco South, which later became J. Harold Distributors. He sold his business in 2007, but still remained active in the operation. John enjoyed hunting and loved dogs and horses. He is survived by son, John Harold Sommers, III and his wife, Jennifer of Allen, Texas and his mother, Carolyn Erickson of Fairview, Texas; daughter, Lori Carder of Lucas, Texas; grandchildren, Brady Sommers, Julia Carder, Ben Carder, and Will Carder; brothers and sisters, Dick Sommers of Long Prairie, Minnesota, Janet Chell and husband, Ted of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and Karen Johnson and husband, Mark of North Oaks, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Nancy Sommers of Plymouth, MN; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister-in-law, Betty Lou Sommers, and brother, Gene Sommers. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 5, 2009, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel in Allen, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family is accepting donations to the SPCA of McKinney, 8411 Stacy Rd., McKinney, TX 75070.
