John Joseph "Jack" Sauntry

John Joseph “Jack” Sauntry, 92, Frisco, Texas, formerly of El Paso, Texas passed away on October 20, 2011 in Gunter, Texas. John or “Jack” was born in Platte, South Dakota on March 7, 1919. He grew up in Sioux City, Iowa, where he received his education. He entered Civil Service at Hastings, Nebraska, during World War II, employed by the United States Navy. After serving in the Navy from 1944 to 1946, he returned to his job at the Navy in Hastings. Transferring to the Department of the Army in 1949, Jack worked in Sidney, Nebraska and Joliet, Illinois until 1956 when he transferred to White Sands Missile Range. In 1965, he moved his family from Las Cruces, New Mexico to El Paso, Texas. He retired in 1975 and started his own business, “Jack’s Mountain Firewood”. He loved nothing more than spending time in the mountains cutting firewood; when he wasn’t busy working he could be found playing golf at the Anthony Country Club, skeet shooting or bird hunting with one or all of his boy’s. Jack lived in El Paso until 2010 when he and his wife Pat Sauntry decided to move to Frisco, Texas to be closer to family. He was a devout Catholic and parishioner for over 45 years at St. Matthew’s Parish in El Paso, Texas and most recently at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Frisco, Texas. He served as an Usher at St. Matthew’s for many years. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Lorena Sauntry; his brother, Jerry Sauntry; his two sisters, Margaret Redding and Dorothy Wanezek and his daughter Patty Ann Roll. Survivors include his loving wife of 72 years, Patricia Sauntry; his three sons Mike Sauntry of Houston Texas; Tim Sauntry and his wife Karen Sauntry of Frisco, Texas and Mark Sauntry and his wife Kristi Sauntry of Overland Park, Kansas. He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. The family extends a grateful thanks to all the caregivers at Hilltop Haven in Gunter, Texas for all their loving support they gave Jack over the past several months. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Matthews Catholic Church in El Paso, Texas on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at 11:15 AM. Interment will follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery at 1:00 PM. A visitation will be held at Martin Funeral Home West in El Paso, Texas on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
