John Edward Pope

Mr. John Edward Pope, age 79, of McKinney, Texas passed away on February 5, 2004, in McKinney. He was born on December 18, 1924, in Jackson, Mississippi to Dr. John Edward and Mary Sadie (Everett) Pope. He married Shirley Ann Sanders on July 30, 1976, in Oxnard, California. He attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland where he graduated in 1947. Mr. Pope was a retired Navy Commander and a veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was awarded many medals during his time of service to include the Air Medal (2 gold stars); Navy Unit Commendation; Korean Presidential Unit Citation; American Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal; China Service Medal (Extended); National Defense Service Medal (1 star); Korean Service Medal (4 bronze stars); and the United Nations Service Medal. He was a member of the Experimental Test Pilots Organization. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Pope of McKinney; sons, John Michael Pope and wife, Dana of San Diego, California and Ronald Lee Morris and wife, Erin of Camas, Washington; daughters, Teri Ann Chapin and husband, Bill of McKinney and Stacey Sue Jones and husband, Jimmy of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands; 14 grandsons; and 11 great grandchildren. Mr. Pope was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharyn Gray and his parents. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, February 8, 2004, in the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel with Larry Burgen officiating.
