Joe Martin Rodgers

Funeral Services for Mr. Joe Martin Rodgers, 91 year old Lubbock resident, are scheduled for 2 P.M. Monday October 6, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church of Trenton. Burial will be in the Leonard Cemetery. Family visitation will be from 6 until 8 P.M. Sunday October 5, 2014 at the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Chapel at Leonard. Mr. Rodgers passed away October 1, 2014 in Lubbock, Texas.

Joe was born February 12, 1923 to Lonnie Martin Rodgers and Velma Dowell Rodgers in Red River County, Texas.

Joe grew up in the Detroit, TX area where he loved to hunt and fish. He graduated from Detroit High School and entered the Army Infantry soon thereafter. Joe served in the European theater during WWII and earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. He received the Purple Heart after being wounded in action during the Battle of the Bulge. After returning home, he met Ilene Henry and they were married February 8, 1947. Shortly after marrying they moved to Lubbock, TX where he began his career as a mail carrier and his daughter, Donna Jo, was born. In 1958, Joe transferred to Greenville, TX and later retired from the U.S. Postal Service with 31 years of service. After retirement, Joe “Dan-Dan” and Ilene lived in Cheyenne, WY, Trenton, TX and Lubbock, TX to be near their grandchildren.

Joe was a lifelong gardener, hunter, fisherman, and woodworker. He was a servant leader in all the Methodist Churches he attended. He always had a joke or story to tell and never met a stranger.

Joe leaves to cherish his memory his daughter and son-in-law: Donna Jo and Edwin “Andy” Anderson; his grandchildren: Christopher Martin Anderson, Delia Joy O’Steen and husband, Salem, and Katherine Dee Anderson all of Lubbock, TX; his sister: Anita Bangs of Burkburnett, TX. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other loving relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Ilene Henry Rodgers; parents, Lonnie Martin and Velma Rodgers; one brother, Buell Rodgers, and two sisters, Eneree Phifer and Doris Rodgers
