Jean Spurgin passed peacefully from this life to her heavenly home Sunday, January 13, 2013. She was born June 26, 1921 to Matthew Robert Wise and Gracie Pearl (Springston) Wise in Wolfe City, Texas. She married Edward R. Spurgin July 18, 1947 in McKinney, Texas. They were a devoted and loving couple for 62 years. Jean had three children, Basil Ray, Cathy Jean and Jeffrey Lynn. She was preceded in death by her parents, Matthew and Gracie Wise; brothers, Roy, Bob, Basil and Earl; sisters, Gladys and Mearl; sons, Basil and Jeffrey and her husband, Edward Spurgin.

She was a homemaker, mother and friend. Jean held several jobs throughout her life. She worked as a welder in the naval shipyards in Ventura, California during WWII. Most recently she worked as the cook for Lovejoy Elementary School during her children’s school years. Jean was an active Sunday school teacher at East McKinney and Hillcrest Christian Church. She was a leader and a founder of the 4C’s for 4-H Club in Lucas and Lovejoy for many years. She spent many days and weekends taking her children to various 4-H functions. Jean was well known for her wonderful cooking and generous hospitality. Jean and Sandy held many church parties, domino and card parties for their friends and neighbors.

She leaves behind her daughter, Cathy Allcorn and her husband, Skip; daughter-in-law, Joan Spurgin; grandchildren, Joseph Spurgin, Jessica Spurgin, Matt Cupit and wife, Kim; great-granddaughters, Lilly Cupit, Zoe Cupit and Erin Spurgin; brothers and sisters-in-law, Cotton Spurgin and wife, Marion, Truman Spurgin, Billy Spurgin, Dale Spurgin and wife, Barbara and Marie Phelps. She also leaves behind nieces, nephews and many great-nieces and great-nephews. She will be missed and forever loved by her family, her church family and a host of neighbors and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 17, 2013 in the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel with Rev. Keith Spurgin officiating. Interment will follow at Pecan Grove Cemetery, McKinney, Texas. The family will receive friends during a visitation on Wednesday evening from 5:00-7:00 p.m., at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, Allen, Texas.
