James Charles Rutledge

James Charles Rutledge, age 89, known as “JC” to his family, co-workers and many friends, died August 25, 2007. He was a devoted husband, caring father, grandfather and great-grandfather, offering guidance and encouragement to promising young people. He was quick to share his firmly-held opinions whether he was discussing his favorite sports teams, the Cowboys and Rangers, or the “political mess.” His career with the retail grocery giant, Tom Thumb, spanned thirty-six years. When he retired in the late 80’s, he held the position of Vice President, Director of Internal Control. Born January 6, 1918, to Clarence and Bessie Self Rutledge on a farm east of McKinney, Texas, he lived his entire life in the Dallas area. He was a long-time member and supporter of Lakeside Baptist Church in the White Rock area. Both he and his wife loved dogs and raised and showed Shelties for many years. He is survived by his wife of sixty-eight years, Nahoma Cooley Rutledge; children, Joan Phillips and her husband Wayne, Annette Slackney and her husband Cliff, and Gregory Rutledge and his wife Paula; sister, Janelle Hogge; grandchildren, Marcus and Jeremy Phillips, Alisha Bond, Jason Slackney and Laura Fought; great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Isabella, Christian and Jamison Bond, Charlie, Olivia, Caroline, Kate and Andrew Phillips, Randolph Fought and Alexander Slackney. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, August 29, 2007, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel, Highway 75, Exit 38, South of McKinney. Interment will follow at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas. The family will receive friends at the funeral home during a visitation on Tuesday evening beginning at 6:00 PM.
