James "Durwood" Hayes

James “Durwood” Hayes was born to James Dennis Hayes and Mary Elizabeth Lawler Hayes on November 10, 1916, 6 miles north of Trent, Texas. He was a 5th generation Texan, his family being here when Spain owned Texas and being related to a defender of the Alamo, a Capt. McKenzie (Allen side of the family). He married Frances Naomi Huffhines in 1939 in Love County, Oklahoma. He is the father of 5 daughters, Rebecca Hayes, Pat Welch, Jacquelyn Williams, Glynda Covington and Mary Unertl, and has 10 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 1 great great-grandchild. He proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army Air Corp in the Pacific Theatre. He was founder and publisher of the Richardson (Daily) News. His early career was in photographer, having worked for United Press Service and the Dallas Times Herald. He was named one of the top 10 photographers in the Nation and was President of the Dallas-Ft. Worth Press Association. He started several successful businesses still in existence in Richardson. The collection of photographs made by him, his brother, Johnny and father, Denny were purchased by the Dallas Library in the early 1980s. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, sister, 3 grandsons, and 1 great-grandson. A Graveside Service will be held at Restland Cemetery on Monday, September 28, 2009 at 2:00 PM with Chaplain Alan Lukker officiating. The family will receive friends during a visitation at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Gunter on Sunday, September 27, 2009 beginning at 1:00 PM.
