Homer G. Bankhead

Homer G. Bankhead, age 85, of Allen, Texas, passed away on December 24, 2008. He was born on April 18, 1923 in Snyder, Texas to Charles E. and Gladys Walker Bankhead. He grew up in Dallas, Texas, where he graduated from W.H. Adamson High School. Homer went on to graduate from the Merchant Marine Academy in Great Neck, New York and served as a Lieutenant in the Merchant Marines in World War II. He also proudly served as a Private in the U.S. Army. Homer received his bachelor’s degree from North Texas State University, and at the age of 72 he received his Juris Doctorate from Texas Wesleyan University. As a professional fundraiser, he managed successful campaigns for the United Way, as well as various colleges, hospitals, and churches around the country. He was a life long member of the Church of Christ. Homer married Mary Ann Hedgcoxe on January 15, 1954, who preceded him in death in 1990. He is also preceded in death by his parents; brother Charles Walker Bankhead; sister Elaine Tutt; and wife Juanita Hipp Bankhead. He is survived by his wife of ten years Billy Merle Bankhead of Midland, Texas; his children with Mary Ann Hedgcoxe Bankhead: Barefoot Bankhead and wife Donis; Honey Gray and husband Joe; Melody Ostrander and husband Ed; Missy Siemietkowski and husband John of Washington DC; grandchildren, Brooks and Ben Bankhead, Chelsea and Chance Gray, Brandon, Katie, Kelly Scott, and Holly Ostrander, Grace and Claire Siemietkowski; and brother, Ribble Bankhead of Theodore, Alabama. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., December 29, 2008 in the Chapel at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, with Keith Maloney, pastor of Greenville Oaks Church of Christ, officiating. Interment will follow at Ridgeview Cemetery in Allen, Texas. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. on December 28, 2008 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home.
