IN LOVING MEMORY

Herbert S. Hill

Nov 23 1937 - Jul 05 2014

Herb passed away July 5, 2014, after suffering a massive stroke June 21. Although everything possible was done, earlier hopes for a recovery were complicated by his other health issues until he no longer had the strength to recover.  We were with him when he took his final breath.  Although we will miss him more than mere words can convey, we did not want him to continue to suffer any longer when there was no hope of recovery.

Herb’s father died in a tragic accident when he was nine years old and as the oldest child in the family, he stepped into the role of father figure to his siblings.  His sister Sara (the baby of the family) tells about his taking her down to the woods to cut a Christmas tree. He had a deep and lasting love and bond with his siblings, Nancy, Barbara, and Sara and his brother, Billy who preceded him in death August 28, 2007. His mother, Elizabeth White Hill, passed away June 5, 2007.

After graduating from Edmunds High School, Sumter SC, in 1955, he entered the Navy and served on the destroyer USS Perry until 1959 when he received his honorable discharge and returned to Sumter, SC. He started a job with Remington Rand Univac which took him to St. Paul, Minnesota, where we met and married November 19, 1960. We had 53 years together. Our daughter, Debbie, was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, December 20, 1969. We moved frequently because of Herb’s work until 1974 when we moved to Plano, TX and have remained there since. When we lived in Atlanta, Georgia, Herb attended Georgia Tech. Herb spent most of his working years as a programmer in switching and call processing systems.

Herb was a "country" boy growing up and that was part of him all his life.  He loved hunting and roaming in the woods around his boyhood home.  He had a small garden which gave him pleasure after retiring. His mind was always active and his interests in alternative medicine became expansive.  He became extremely knowledgeable about alternative medicines and offered his advice willingly to any and all who wanted to know about it.  He extensively read and searched on the internet on several health issues and treatments and educated himself on many topics.

Another hobby after retiring was collecting recipes and he was making his own cookbooks.  Between magazines, newspapers and TV shows, he had a large collection of recipes (some of which were actually used!).

Favorite TV shows were westerns, particularly John Wayne movies, nature shows, FOX news and commentary shows.  He was a staunch conservative and found that the FOX news channel was more in line than with his beliefs than what he considered those other “liberal" networks! He enjoyed The Vikings and The Bible series and watched all the episodes that were offered (otherwise he didn’t watch much TV).

He was a good man, loyal to his family and friends. He was interested in other people’s lives and quick to smile and joke with people he met. He had a deep moral core and tried to always live in a way that reflected that. His passing has left a deep wound in our heart. We know he is united with those he loved that preceded him and that someday we also will be united with him.

A funeral service will be held Friday, July 11, 2014 at 12:00 Noon at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel in Allen, Texas. Interment will follow at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas, Texas. The family will receive friends during a visitation being held Thursday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen, Texas.
