Helen Ruth Russell Massey

Helen Ruth Russell Massey left this world on March 24, 2014 to be with her Heavenly Father. Ruth was born on December 23, 1923 in Van Alstyne, TX to J. V. and Julia (McLain) Russell. She graduated from Van Alstyne High School in 1941. She married Herbert Neeland Massey on October 18, 1941. They had 2 children, Bobby and Beverly, but helped raise many others. Ruth’s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were blessed to have had 90 years with this wonderful lady. She was always involved in all their activities and supported them in whatever they did.

Ruth worked at Kelly AFB and Perrin AFB for a total of 19 ½ years. After retiring from civil service due to the closing of Perrin AFB, she was employed at Gunter ISD where she was a classroom aide for 3 years and secretary to the Superintendent for 19 years. In addition, she was a drill team sponsor for Gunter ISD and maintained the Kerfoot Scholarship records. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Gunter, where she taught Sunday School for many years as well as served on the Fellowship Committee, taught Vacation Bible School, and sang in the choir. One of her favorite memories was her trip to the Holy Land in 1983. She was a 4-H leader at the local and county level for approximately 50 years where she received the Richard Kramer Award among others. She was also a Boy Scout Leader, TESA President, member of Grayson County Retired School Educators Association, collected school taxes, and worked school elections.

She is survived by her son, Robert “Bob” Massey and his wife, Sharon and daughter, Beverly Millar and her husband Mark, all of Gunter; grandchildren, Stacie Hunsaker and Boyd of Gunter, Tammy Sanso and Derek of Sherman, Bobby Massey and Julie of Gunter, Christopher Millar of Dallas, and Brittany Sissney and Michael of Keller, TX; 6 great-grandchildren, David Sanso, Gregory and Brandon Hunsaker, Jessica and John Massey and Kara Sissney; sisters, Jane Rohe of Bastrop, TX and Mary Rohe of Lubbock, TX; brothers, Jim Russell of Lindale, TX, Wayne Russell of Gunter, TX, Wandelle Russell of Irving, TX and Merle Russell of Gordonville, TX.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers, J.V., Bobby, and Gene Russell.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons: Bobby Massey, Christopher Millar, David Sanso, Gregory and Brandon Hunsaker, and John Massey.

In lieu of flowers, Ruth requests that donations be made to Gunter’s First Baptist Church or the charity of your choice.

Visitation will be Thursday evening, March 27, 2014, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Gunter, TX. A Funeral Service will be at the First Baptist Church in Gunter, TX on Friday, March 28, 2014 at 10:30 AM. Interment will follow at Cedarlawn Cemetery in Sherman, TX.
