Harvey Joe Smith

Jan 22 1929 - Aug 15 2014

Harvey Joe Smith, 1929—2014, A Christian, American, Texas husband, father and friend. Son of Floyd and Bee Harding Smith. Harvey was a Texas CPA who never earned any grade except "A" in any accounting course through his masters. Harvey earned his BBA Degree from Midwestern University and his MBA from SMU. While serving in the US Army during the Korean War, as the lone soldier at Longhorn Ordinance Works, Karnack, Texas, his job was to administer the Army's munitions contract. Following his Honorable Discharge from the service, he was employed as an accountant at the same Karnack location by Thiokol Chemical Corporation where he met and married Sara Ella Winslett. After 13 years at Thiokol, the Smith family relocated to Dallas where his career path took him from controller at El Chico to Varo in Plano, where he was Manager of their Night Vision Division. Later, as an employee of Pearle Vision Center, Harvey purchased several optical stores which became a part of Texas State Optical. While President of TSO, he was also President of Pearle's International Division, in which capacity he purchased chains of optical stores in many foreign countries, hired operational personnel to run them and changed the stores' names to Pearle Vision Center. During his retirement years, he purchased and operated SAVY Quick Print in Dallas for several years. Sold it and worked for Dillard's until his doctor told him to get knee replacements or change jobs. So, at the age of 80, he began his work at the IRS. Harvey Smith often stated that his greatest achievements in life were his children.
