Harold W. Pace

Harold W. Pace, 84, of Grand Prairie, Texas passed away on Friday, January 4, 2007. Mr. Pace was born in Desert, Texas in 1923 and grew up in nearby Whitewright. His parents were Roscoe and Lucille Pace of Denison, and he spent much of his time on a Whitewright farm owned by his grandparents, W. A. and Nora Akridge. Mr. Pace attended Longview and Tyler high schools before signing up for the Army Air Corps in WWII. He was a pilot on B-29 bombers, flying two tours of duty. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained when his bomber was shot down on a mission over Japan. It crash-landed in the ocean and the crew was rescued by an American destroyer. He also was awarded the Air Medal for other heroic actions. Mr. Pace subsequently attended the University of Texas, where he graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. He went to work that same year with Parke-Davis and Company in pharmaceutical sales, where he stayed until his retirement in 1993. In 1946 he married Lois Marie Ashburn, the daughter of the mayor of Denison. They had been married 61 years at the time of his death. Their son, Harold W. Pace, Jr. was born in 1952. Mr. Pace was preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe and Lucille Pace, and his aunt and uncle Vona Mae and Paul Cook of Whitewright. Mr. Pace is survived by his wife Lois; son Harold W. Pace and daughter-in-law Shelley Pace of Weatherford. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, January 9, 2007 at 11:00am at Oak Hill Cemetery in Whitewright, Texas.
