George L. McDowell

Mr. George L. McDowell, age 78, of Anna, Texas, passed away July 27, 2005, in McKinney, Texas. He was born December 14, 1926, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Joe Ira and Fannie Agnes (Gibbs) McDowell. On December 9, 1989, he married Martha Luscombe in Greenville, Texas. He was a graduate of Southern Methodist University. Mr. McDowell was an officer in the U.S. Army and served in the U.S. Air Force as well. He retired from E-Systems where he was an electrical engineer. Prior to working at E-Systems, George worked at Radiation Company and helped develop Apollo space craft instruments. He volunteered as an AARP tax consultant, was an avid bridge player, loved square dancing and wood crafting and was an avid sports fan. He is survived by his wife, Martha McDowell of Anna, Texas; son, Joe McDowell and wife, Tammy of Stafford, Virginia; grandchildren, Gary McDowell of Wetumpka, Alabama and Tina Spears and husband, Joe of Wetumpka, Alabama; great-grandchild, Shiasia McDowell of Alabama; nephew, Jerry Jorgensen and wife, Debbie of Sioux City, Iowa; niece, Judy McLarty and husband, Terry of Sioux City, Iowa; great-nieces, Jaclyn Jorgensen and Meredith McLarty; great-nephew, Kyle McLarty; former daughter-in-law, Teresa McDowell of Wetumpka, Alabama; former wife, Lu Ann McDowell; and many other loving friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, July 30, 2005, in the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel. A graveside service will follow at Highland Cemetery. There will be a remembrance gathering from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M., Friday, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society, The American Heart Association or The American Foundation for the Blind.
