Frances Gibson Waller

Frances Mahala (Gibson) Waller of Melissa was born August 29, 1914 (the month WWI began) and passed away peacefully at age 98 at Silverado Plano on Sunday, September 9, 2012. She was one of 7 children of W.M. (Jake) and Mary (Chambers) Gibson, both descendants of large pioneer North Collin County farm families: the Gibsons, Chambers, Coffmans, J.M. Graves, and McPhersons. Frances was born, raised and educated in Melissa, finishing high school in McKinney in 1932.  After attending college at Baylor and NTSTC (in Denton) she worked in downtown Dallas at the Mercantile National Bank, in the Magnolia Building beneath the "Flying Red Horse", handling mainly customer car loans.

Frances married Fred Waller, one of Dallas' first refrigeration mechanics (butcher shops his 1st customers) who went on to work at North American Aviation and at the nation's first air-conditioned USVA Hospital in McKinney. Fred was a WWI veteran of the 42nd "Rainbow" Division, making Frances one of the last surviving WWI Widows.  After WWII, Fred and Frances returned to Melissa to raise their family. She served as the church secretary at Melissa First Baptist for 35 years.   Frances was later the bookkeeper from 1968-89 at Wells Bros. Granary in Melissa.   She was a member of the Melissa Pioneer Club, Garden Club and T.E.L. Sunday School Class.


Frances is survived by her sons, James Waller and wife Virginia (Gossett) of Brownwood, Texas and Bill Waller and wife Kay (Taylor) of Dallas; grandchildren, Mary, Jeff, Julie, and Keith; great-grandchildren, Nate, Jessie,Janie, Maggie & Josh; sister, Jean Jernigan of Chambersville, Texas; brother, Bill Gibson of Salt Lake City, Utah; several nieces and nephews; and literally hundreds of cousins, with many still located in the DFW region.  

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred in 1967, sisters, Marian, Doris, and Margaret, and brother, John.
 
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 11th, 2012, at the Melissa Christian Church on Harrison St.  Interment will follow at Old Highland Cemetery in Melissa. The family will receive friends during a visitation one hour prior to the service at 10:00 a.m.
