Ernie Roys, age 55, of Terrell, Texas passed away on June 16, 2006, in Dallas, Texas. He was born August 11, 1950, in Dallas, Texas to Tome and Autry Roys. He served his country honorably from October 1967 to May 1970 in both Germany and Vietnam. Ernie Roys began his career as a firefighter with the Plano Fire Department on January 1, 1977. He was promoted to Fire Apparatus Operator on March 24, 1980, Lieutenant on March 7, 1983, Captain on May 27, 1985, and Battalion Chief on March 2, 1998. A majority of his career was spent as a Captain or Battalion Chief and this is what most Plano firefighters remember about him. Ernie Roys was instrumental in the creation and development of both the Plano Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team and the Special Rescue Team, both of which are highly recognized in the DFW area. Ernie was well liked and respected by the men under his command and had the reputation of always taking care of his men, both on and off duty. Chief Roys will be dearly missed by the men and women of the Plano Fire Department. Ernie was also a Mason. He is survived by his son Jeffrey Weylan & wife Jessica of Dodd City, TX; grandchildren Josh and Hunter Coldiron and Callie Caldwell; mother Autry Roys of Duncanville, TX; sisters B.J. Kidd of Dallas, Lois Scherer of Cedar Hill, TX and Yvonne Smith of Fort Worth, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews and other loving relatives. He was preceded in death by his father Tome Roys and brother Tommy Roys. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, June 20, 2006 in the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel with Rev. Bobby Baker officiating. Interment will follow at Grove Hill Memorial Park. Family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 PM, Monday, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home.
