Elizabeth Reid Sutherland

Mimi was born to the late John H and Elizabeth B Reid, March 17, 1934, in Cleveland, Ohio. She graduated high school from Laurel School in 1953 then received a BA in Sociology from Vanderbilt University in 1957. She married Dr Hugh L Sutherland, Jr in 1957. After several moves they resided in Huntsville, Al. Mimi survived polio in 1951 which left her left arm almost immobile. Despite this she raised three children and participated fully in their lives until her death. Mimi was a social worker briefly in Nashville. After her divorce in 1973 she worked for Pizitz department store in Huntsville and later the MiCom on Redstone Arsenal. She relocated to the Marietta, Ga area in 1987 and worked on Dobbs Air Force Base as a Fleet Manager for the Department of Defense. She retired in 1997. Mimi hands were always busy Despite her handicap she painted, did needlework and knitted. While in Marietta she became an avid basket-weaver and took and taught classes in her community there. She also was a busy member of the Alpharetta UMC where she enjoyed many bible studies and discipleship classes and where she completed her walk to Emmaus .

In 2006 Mimi moved to the Plano area to be closer to her children where she became very active in the Grace Avenue UMC Providence adult Sunday school class and in the women's Lydia Group. She continued to basket-weave and began beading, even after losing the sight in one eye shortly after having undergone a mastectomy. Mimi passed away just after the happiest time in her recent life - after a Christmas spent with her three children and four granchildren. She is whole and healthy and free from pain now.

Elizabeth is survived by her three children, Elizabeth “Beth” Sutherland and husband, Doug Taylor of Dallas, Texas, Margaret Wallis and her husband, Bob of Elliott City, Maryland, Hugh “Chip” Sutherland, III and his wife, Joyce of Plano, Texas; four grandchildren, John Wallis, Eric Wallis, Victoria “Tori” Sutherland, and Molly Sutherland; sister, Katharine “Tomma” Stone of Conyers, Georgia and several nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth is preceded in death by her parents, John and Elizabeth Reid, brother, John Hooker Reid, III.

A Memorial Service will be held at Grace Avenue United Methodist Church in Frisco on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 3:00 PM.
