Edward Cates Hughes was born March 2, 1962, in Sherman, Texas to Ralph Ray Hughes and Barbara Nell Hasty Hughes. He married Connie Renee Thurman on June 5, 1982, in Savoy, Texas. He died Monday, July 25, 2016, in Galveston, Texas at the age of 54. He was a life long resident of Whitewright, Texas.

Ed was an Honor Graduate of Whitewright High School in 1980; he graduated from the University of North Texas with a Bachelors Degree in Finance in 1984. He was employed as an I.T. Professional for Xerox for 15 years and most recently for Tenet Healthcare. Ed was very active in his church at First Baptist Church in Whitewright. He served as a Deacon and was Ordained to Ministry on December 28, 2008. He was active in Gladius Ministry, On the Road Ministries and Aim For India. Ed loved his church, his family and his community. He was loved and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by wife, Connie Hughes of Whitewright; son, Chris Hughes and wife Hailey of Whitewright; daughter, Holly Brown and husband Duston of Joaquin; mother, Barbara Hughes of Whitewright; sister, Becca Hughes Ferrill of Whitewright; aunt, Carol Hughes Sandefur of Whitewright; niece, Quincy Ferrill of Whitewright; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Gene and Helen Thurman of Savoy; sister-in-law, Angela Barron and husband Ronnie of Gunter; sister-in-law, Kelly Davis and husband Mitch of Blanchard, Oklahoma; nephews, Daniel Barron and Preston Davis; niece, Emily Morrow and husband Austin. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Hughes; aunt, Nova Hughes; grandparents, Marshall and Mary Hasty, and Gene and Opal Hughes.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday, July 28, 2016, at First Baptist Church, Whitewright, Texas. Officiating the service will be Rev. Leon Veazey and Rev. Dave Bradley. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Whitewright, Texas. Pallbearers will be Brian Boaen, Jon Baucom, Ronnie Barron, Mitch Davis, Bobby Purdom, Chuck Graham, Greg Threadgill and Randy Decker. Honorary Pallbearers will be Elders and Deacons of the First Baptist Church of Whitewright, Eddie McCartney, Doc Hannah and Jimmy Keel.

Memorials may be made to the FBC Whitewright, or to FBC Whitewright Prison Ministries or to the FBC Whitewright Aim For India.
