Mr. Ed “Sonny” Huntsberry, age 84, of McKinney, Texas passed away March 14, 2011, at the Medical Center of McKinney. Sonny was born on December 30, 1926, in Winchester, Virginia to Edward Rhodes and Virginia Hollis (O’Connor) Huntsberry. He attended Handley High School with the class of 1944, and subsequently graduated from military preparatory school at Augusta Military Academy in Augusta County, Virginia. After proudly serving his country for 3 years with the Army in the U.S. and Pacific Theater, he attended Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1951. Sonny joined other members of his family in the operation of Huntsberry Shoe Stores until 1966. He was active in a number of civic and fraternal organizations. He was a two term President of Winchester Retail Merchants Association, President two terms of the Winchester Frederick County Chamber of Commerce, Charter member and President of Front Royal Jaycees, Director of Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival, and Director of the Industrial Development Corporation. He was a member of the Winchester Kiwanis Club, Fraternal Order of Elks, the Salvation Army, and the Winchester Masonic Lodge. Sonny was also the Chairman of the Winchester Republican Committee, and was the first Republican elected to the Winchester City Council. After moving to Texas, Sonny became a member and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Austin, Texas and currently was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in McKinney, Texas. Sonny is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Ann Peach Huntsberry of Upperville, Virginia; children, Barbara Jo McIntyre of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Edward Rhodes Huntsberry III of Plano, Texas, and Lynn Huntsberry Boyd of McKinney, Texas; brother, Charles R. Huntsberry of Winchester, Virginia; grandchildren, Corey McIntyre of Arlington, Virginia, Wes McIntyre of Virginia Beach, Ashley Huntsberry and Mark Huntsberry both of Plano. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, James Walter Huntsberry of Winchester, Virginia. A memorial graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 19, 2011, at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen, Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Directors. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations in memory of Sonny, to the American Heart Association, www.heart.org.
