Dr. Jerry L. Sims, M.D. FACS

Dr. Jerry L. Sims of McKinney, Texas passed away May 16, 2015 at the age of 83. He was born December 17, 1931 to Edwin Sims and Mildred (Hogan) Sims in Gainesville, Texas. Dr. Sims served his country proudly in the United States Air Force as a Captain. He married Janet Guthrie on July 24, 1953 in Kilgore, Texas.

Dr. Sims was a graduate of Austin College in Sherman and Southwestern Medical Center.

He completed his general surgical residency at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Sims served as Chief of Surgery and Chief of Staff for Medical Center of McKinney, Medical Staff President for the North Texas Medical Center Board and was the McKinney ISD Team Physician for forty-nine years. Dr. Sims retired in 2000.

As a native of McKinney, he served his community as President and Board Member of the McKinney ISD School Board of Trustees, President of the Heard Museum, Board Member of Mo-Ranch Presbyterian Center, and McKinney Rotary Club member. In his continued commitment he achieved and received the Silver Beaver award by the Boy Scouts of America, the 2013 First Humanitarian Award, and the 2013 Cary Cox Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award and was inducted into the McKinney ISD Athletic Hall of Honor.

His personal interest included golf, football, and gardening. Dr. Sims will be best known for his incredible sense of humor and generous heart.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Sims of McKinney, daughter Lorretta Sims of McKinney, son, Charles Edwin Sims and wife, Cyndi Sims; grandson, Jared Sims and wife Taylor; granddaughter, Alisa Sims of Atlanta; and great-grandson, Cayden Sims;

Dr. Sims was preceded in death by his parents and son, David Guthrie Sims.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 22, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church in McKinney, Texas with Dr. John Blacklock officiating. A private inurnment will be held at Pecan Grove Cemetery in McKinney, Texas.
