Dr. Jack Sanford Burrus

Dr. Jack Sanford Burrus, of McKinney, Texas, passed away on March 30, 2017.  He was born on January 29, 1939, in Tyler, Texas, to Charles H. and Aleta (Hunter) Burrus. On June 3, 1961 Dr. Burrus married Sylvia Rayvel Moseley in Colorado City, Texas. 

His family moved to McKinney when he was an infant. He graduated from Boyd High School in McKinney and then attended Texas Tech University, where he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity.  Dr. Burrus graduated from Baylor University School of Dentistry, where he was a member of the Xi Psi Phi international dental fraternity.  After graduating from Baylor, he joined the Navy and was stationed at the submarine based in in New London, Connecticut, where he practiced dentistry for two years.  He and Rayvel returned to McKinney to raise their family in his hometown and lived there for the remainder of his life.  Dr. Burrus practiced dentistry from 1967 until 2004 in McKinney.  He was a member of First Christian Church, McKinney Rotary Club, McKinney Jaycees, a founder of McKinney Ducks Unlimited and was a leader with Boy Scout Troop 303 in McKinney. He took the Boy Scout troop to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico twice.

He is survived by his wife, Rayvel Burrus of McKinney, Texas; daughter, Michelle Weiner and husband Dr. Richard Weiner of Dallas, Texas; son, Matthew Burrus and husband Michael Pearce of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Brandon Fuller, Estelle Burrus-Pearce, Winston Burrus-Pearce, Elizabeth Burrus and Emma Burrus; brother, Dr. C. Sidney Burrus and wife Mary Lee Burrus of Houston, Texas; and numerous other loving relatives and friends.

Dr. Burrus is preceded in death by his father, Charles H. Burrus and mother, Aleta Burrus Huffman; and son, Charles Michael Burrus.

Married for nearly 56 years to the love of his life, he gave Rayvel a rose every day to show her how much he loved her. While he had a life-long love of travel, he and Rayvel traveled the world even more extensively following his retirement, including trips to the Caribbean, Mexico, Europe, Alaska, and the Mediterranean. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting, fishing and camping. Dr. Burrus also had a great admiration for classic cars and took apart and reassembled a 1949 Mercury with his son Mike. He had many hobbies, including stamp collecting; coin collecting; woodworking; photography; art collecting, particularly Larry Dyke’s scenic landscapes and classic golf courses; and listening to live music, especially Willie Nelson. Of all of his achievements, he was most proud of his wife and his children. He was a generous, compassionate and loving husband, father, brother, son and friend.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen, Texas.  Interment will follow at Pecan Grove Cemetery in McKinney, Texas.  The family will receive friends during a visitation being held on Monday evening, from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
