Dr. Edward Monroe Slack Jr.

Dr. Edward Monroe Slack Jr., of McKinney, Texas, passed away on November 24, 2010. He was born December 31, 1917, in Pecos, Texas to Dr. Edward Monroe Slack Sr. and Enid (Gaines) Slack. On March 24, 1950 Dr. Slack married Dorris Smith Rogers in Memphis, Tennessee. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Corps. Dr. Slack was a veteran of WWII, where he was Captain of a B-17 “I Do Dit”, in North Africa and Italy. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with eight oak leaf clusters. Dr. Slack was an optometrist in McKinney for 43 years. He was a member and past president of the McKinney Rotary Club; he was a member of the McKinney ISD school board; and former president of the North Texas Optometric Association. Dr. Slack was a member of First Christian Church in McKinney, Texas and also served as a deacon there. Dr. Slack will be remembered by his family as a man who, after going through a world war, found his main joys in life through his family, friends, and the people he helped through the years. He is survived by his wife Dorris Slack of McKinney, Texas; son, Eddie Slack of The Colony, Texas; daughter, Linda Slack Dugger of McKinney, Texas; son, Dr. James R. Rogers and wife Patsy of Round Rock, Texas; grandchildren, Matthew Dugger, Katie Wells and husband Richard, Emily Slack, Allison Slack Spears and husband John, Kirk Rogers and wife Marci; great-grandchild, Claire Rogers; numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives. Dr. Slack was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Nora Slack Cavitt and Lucille Slack Mitchell. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 30, 2010, 2:00 p.m., at First Christian Church, in McKinney, Texas with Dr. Neill Grimes officiating. Interment will follow at Ridgeview Memorial Park, in Allen, Texas. Family and friends are invited to the funeral home at their convenience to pay their respects and to sign the register book on Monday. The family will receive friends at a visitation beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Monday evening at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen, Texas.
