Clifford Joan Newman

Mrs. Joan Cody Newman, age 82, of Plano, Texas passed away January 5, 2010. Joan was born on November 29, 1927 in Pleasant Valley, Texas, to Harry and Ella (Peters) Cody. She married her high school sweetheart, Chuck on October 15th, 1947 at her mother’s home and spent the next 62 years sharing adventures, interests and ongoing games of gin rummy. Joan was a charter member of Custer Road United Methodist Church in Plano. She grew up in Greenville, worked for the Texas Telephone Company in Sherman and for various churches, including Westcliff United Methodist Church in Fort Worth and White Rock United Methodist Church in Dallas. She was secretary to the Assistant to the Bishop at the United Methodist Church offices in Dallas, as well as business administrator at Custer Road United Methodist Church. Joan loved classical music, knitting, sewing and nurturing her African violets and orchids. She was an avid reader, a great cook, devoted wife, dedicated mother and doting grandmother. Joan is survived by her husband, Chuck; daughter Diane Calhoun and husband, Kim, of Springboro, OH; son, Kerry Newman and wife, Lisa, of Grand Prairie, TX; grandchildren Bess Calhoun, Abby Calhoun, Terran Spencer and husband, Russell, and John Bunch and wife, Candace; great-grand children Ethan and Austin Spencer; brother James Cody of Plano, TX: niece, Beth Walker; great niece, Tricia Walker. She was preceded in death by her parents. Memorial services will be held at Custer Road United Methodist Church, 6601 Custer Rd., Plano, Texas on Saturday, January 9th at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Clara Gibson Prayer Conference, c/o Custer Road UMC, 6601 Custer Rd., Plano, TX, 75023-3204.
