Chieko Okinaga- Born, February 10, 1919 in San Diego, California Chieko died on January 25, 2012 at the age of 92, with her family by her side, in Lucas, Texas. She is survived by three children: Misayo Jacquelyn Hescock of New Jersey, David Masato Okinaga of South Carolina, and Kathryn Meiko Okinaga-Gipe and her husband Duane of Indiana; three grandchildren: granddaughter Laura Hescock Skaggs and her husband, Mark, of Texas and their four children Benjamin, Jack, Samuel, and Sophie; granddaughter Halayn Hescock; and grandson Nathan Hescock both of New Jersey. She is also survived by her youngest sister Katharine I. Nanchi, and brother, Archie Nanchi. Chieko was born in San Diego, the oldest of five children. At the start of World War II in 1942, the family was relocated to the Internment Camp at Manzanar, California. It was there that she met and married her late husband. Jack Okinaga, in 1942. After the war, they relocated to Seabrook, New Jersey in 1945. They raised their family in South Jersey and she remained there until around 1996. From there, she lived with her granddaughter Laura and family, from Texas to California, and finally back to Texas in 2007. This allowed her to be with her great-grandchildren, watching them grow up, one of the greatest joys of her later years. Travelling and fishing had always been a passion of hers; including many cross-country drives with a camper and children and grandchildren in tow. Chieko had always been an active crafter, and talented knitter, crocheter, lace-maker, seamstress, needlepointer, etc. She was an active member of the Allen Senior Recreation Center, where she enjoyed friends, canasta, bingo, and bus trips to Oklahoma. Her ashes will be buried in California next to her late mother and husband, Jack Hideto Okinaga. A memorial service will be held at the Grace Church at 2005 Estates Parkway, Lucas, TX on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 6 pm for friends and family with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: The Allen Senior Recreation Center Chieko Okinaga Memorial Fund 451 Saint Mary Drive Allen, TX 75002
