Billy Hugh Douglas

Billy Hugh Douglas passed away on Sunday, November 22, 2015 at his residence in Farmersville, Texas, at the age of 83. Bill was born on February 8, 1932 in Copeville, Texas, the son of Sherman (“Pete”) Douglas and Ruby Aline Ward Douglas. Bill graduated from Princeton High School in Princeton, Texas in 1949. Bill was proud to have been a member of the Princeton Panther championship football team in 1948, defeating the perennial powerhouse Frisco Coons. Bill married Leta Ruth Purcell at the Culleoka, Texas Baptist Church on July 15, 1951. Bill and Leta made their home in Farmersville, Texas and raised three sons there. For many years, Bill was known as the “telephone man” to most everyone in the Farmersville area. He retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone in 1984, and spent the last several years of his life raising beef cattle and honeybees on their farm. Bill served on the Farmersville Volunteer Fire Department and on the Farmersville City Council. He was also a member of Farmersville Masonic Lodge for over fifty years. Bill is preceded in death by his parents Sherman Douglas and Ruby Douglas, and a brother Ronnie Douglas. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Leta Ruth Purcell Douglas, of Farmersville, Texas, brother S.J. Douglas, and wife Helen Douglas of Merit, Texas, son Tony H. Douglas, and wife Paula Hill Douglas of Plano, Texas, son Dale Douglas, and wife Renee Riley Douglas of Midland, Texas, and son Rusty Douglas of Corpus Christi, Texas, grandson Matt Douglas and wife Lauren of Frisco, Texas, granddaughter Leah Douglas Sams and husband Jeffery Sams of Texarkana, Arkansas, granddaughter Merritt Elizabeth Douglas of College Station, Texas and granddaughter Catherine Sayer Douglas of Midland, Texas. Four great grandchildren, Barrett Sams, Georgia Jane Sams, and Mary Martha Sams, of Texarkana, Arkansas, and Harper Elizabeth Douglas of Frisco, Texas, also survive him. In addition, two sisters-in law and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, survive him. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Hurst’s Fielder Baker Funeral Home, 107 N. Washington Street, Farmersville, Texas 75442. Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at I. O. O. F. Cemetery in Farmersville, Texas.
