Billie Jo Smith

Billie Jo Phillips Smith was born October 18, 1925 in Whitewright, Texas and raised by her mother, Velma Painter, grandmother and aunts. She married Marvin Norman Smith on May 17, 1942 in Durant, Oklahoma. She died Thursday, February 27, 2014 at Sterling House in Ada, Oklahoma at the age of 88. She was a longtime resident of Whitewright, Texas.

During most of Billie’s School years, her mother Velma worked at Mr. Kingery’s café in downtown Whitewright. Mr. Kingery always told Billie and her brother that if they would eat a plate lunch at noon, they could have all the hamburgers they wanted after school. She introduced herself to Marvin in downtown Whitewright, they married when she was sixteen, and remained married until his death seventy years later.

She was a member of Kentuckytown Baptist Church.

She is survived by son, Tom Smith and wife Linda of Konawa, Oklahoma; son-in-law, David Bledsoe of Colbert, Oklahoma; grandchildren; Sam Smith, Sarah Gafford, Nathaniel Smith, Tsegaye Smith, Mike Bledsoe, Matt Bledsoe, and Mitch Bledsoe; 7 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Velma (Painter) Sadler; husband, Marvin Smith; daughter, Jody Bledsoe; brother, James Phillips.

Funeral Services will be held 10:00am, Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel, Whitewright, Texas. Officiating the service will be Rev. Rodney Stanford. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Whitewright, Texas. Pallbearers will be Mike Bledsoe, Matt Bledsoe, Mitch Bledsoe, Sam Smith, Nathaniel Smith, Tsegaye Smith. Honorary Pallbearers will be David Bledsoe and Ralph Brown.
