Betsy Carol Wood

Betsy Carol Wood, loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother passed away in a tragic automobile accident along with her youngest daughter, Lisa Martin, and three grandsons, Chance, Brock, and Reid Martin on September 20th, 2004, near Sherman, Texas. Betsy was born to W.A. and Ruby Brookins on September 4, 1934 in McAlester, Oklahoma. After graduating from McAlester High School in 1953, Betsy went on to complete her B.S. degree at the University of North Texas in Denton, graduating Cum Laude. Betsy taught elementary school for 25 years in Texas and Louisiana. She married James R. Wood on October 6, 1953 in Ada, OK, where they were both students at East Central State College. Betsy was a member of High Pointe Church of Christ in McKinney, TX. Betsy taught elementary school for 20 years in Texas and additional 5 years in the state of Louisiana. Through her positive approach to working with children, she made every effort to enable them to reach their maximum potential. At the same time, she reflected in her teaching career and as a homemaker, her love of God and a strong commitment to her family. Betsy was proud of her children and her grandchildren and loved them deeply. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Betsy was preceded in death by her parents, W.A. and Ruby Brookins, brother Bill Brookins, and sister Jane Crowell. Betsy is survived by her husband, Dr. James R. Wood, McKinney, TX, sons Ronald Wood of Washington, D.C., and Roger Wood of Tyler, Texas, daughter Laura Lokey, son-in-law Jason Lokey, and grandchildren Kaley, Jay and Landry Lokey, of Farmersville, TX. Services will be held in High Pointe Church of Christ in McKinney, TX, at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 23rd with Dr. Michael Lewis officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Directors.
