Berford L. Henry

Berford L. Henry, age 94, of McKinney, Texas, passed away February 6, 2008, in McKinney. Berford was born May 11, 1913, in Blue Ridge, Texas, to E. N. (Newt) and Julia L. (Campbell) Henry. He married Vernell N. Baum on December 26, 1942, in Purcell, Oklahoma. Berford graduated from University of Oklahoma where he obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master’s degree. He proudly served in the United States Army which included tours in World War II, Okinawa, Ie Shima, Pacific Theater and was retired Army Reserve. Berford was a chemistry teacher with the McKinney Independent School District where he taught for many years. He was a member of the Lions Club, Masonic Lodge and past President of the Retired Teacher’s Association. Berford was also a faithful member of First Baptist Church in McKinney where he served as a Sunday School teacher. He enjoyed recreational golf for many years and started the golf program at McKinney High School where he taught golf to many children. He is survived by his wife, Vernell; sons, Pat Henry and wife, Nancy of Tiger, Georgia, and David and wife, Mary Lou of El Paso, Texas; daughters, Julia Lloyd and husband, George of Grapevine, Texas, Betty Doyle of Austin, Texas, and Mary Lewis and husband, Mike, of Sachse, Texas; grandchildren, Mandy, Kara, Rachel, Justin, Shelley, Susan, Dustin, Sarah, Mary and Shawn; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Wilburn and Jay Henry, both of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; sister, Wynona White also of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; numerous other loving relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Houston Henry, and sister, Sally Ellis. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon, Saturday, February 9, 2008, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel in Allen, Texas with Rev. Randy Morlan officiating. Interment will follow at Ridgeview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends during a visitation on Friday evening beginning at 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
