Armando Fernando Villanueva

Armando Fernando Villanueva, 1935-2004, entered into life eternal on November 14, 2004. Armando graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers College with a Bachelor degree in music education and later from East Texas State University with a Master degree in music education. Armando began a teaching career in Texas, and later directed orchestra on the secondary level in New York. He moved to Dallas in 1970, there with colleague teacher, Ms. Jane Aten, he developed a Suzuki based string program for the Dallas Independent School District. This vital program, with its goal of providing instruction to children at risk continues today on 13 campuses. Through Armando’s work and dedication, he touched the hearts and minds of hundreds of children, who otherwise might not have had the opportunity to study music. Armando received many awards and honors because of his dedication to minority children. Among them are Teaching Excellence Award for 1982 and The Arts in Education Award for 1996. Armando was an elected member of Phi Delta Kappa, a professional education fraternity, and Gamma Phi Chapter Sinfonia Fraternity of America. Armando served his country honorably in the United States Army. He is survived by his sister, Gloria; niece, Sharon and family; brother, Roland and sister-in-law, Syliva; nephews, Ronnie and family, JR and family; niece, Laura; and his second family, The Collinas; as well as many close and dear friends. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Holy Cross, 4052 Herschel Avenue, at the corner of Douglas and Herschel, at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 17, 2004. A private interment service will be held at Ridgeview Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Directors, 2525 Central Expressway North, McKinney, TX. Memorial gifts may be given to the Family Place (for battered women and children) P.O. Box 7999, Dallas, TX 75209, the Sisters of Bethlehem at St. Joseph’s Residence, 330 W. Pembroke, Dallas, TX 75208, or Operation Kindness No-Kill Animal Shelter at 3201 Earhart Ave., Carrollton, TX 75006. Please pray for the repose of Armando’s soul.
