Annie Catherine Bristol Watters

Annie Catherine Bristol Watters, age 96, of Decatur, Texas, formerly of Grapevine, Texas, passed away July 9, 2007 in Decatur. She was born on March 2, 1911, in McKinney, Texas, to Charles Todd and Chrystella (Forsythe) Bristol. She married Furman Lee Watters on December 19, 1933, in Durant, OK. Annie received her formal education in Collin County and graduated from McKinney High School in 1929. After receiving her bachelor’s degree from John Tarleton College, she went on to earn her master’s degree from Texas Woman’s University. Annie spent six decades in education and taught at Grapevine-Colleyville ISD for 26 years. She moved to Grapevine in 1954 and taught first grade for eight years. She was asked to create the special education program in 1961, where she worked until her retirement in 1980. It was eight years before another special education teacher was hired in GCISD. Annie was inducted into the GCISD Hall of Fame during the Grapevine High School homecoming activities in October 2001. Mrs. Watters was a charter member of Theta Chi Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International when it was organized on October 6, 1969. Composed originally of teachers in Grapevine-Colleyville ISD and the Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD, Theta Chi Chapter grew to include members who live or work in the northeast Tarrant County area. Mrs. Watters served as a mentor to many younger women educators. In 1998, Mrs. Watters received the "Chapter Achievement Award" for her years of service to Theta Chi Chapter. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Watters Kellum and her husband Ken of Decatur, Texas; five grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; sister, Agnes Boswell and her husband Robert E. of Houston, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives and friends. Preceding her in death were her husband, Furman Lee Watters; son, Charles Lambert Watters; brother, George Lambert Bristol; and sister-in-law, Charlotte Donahoe Bristol. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, July 11, 1007 at First Presbyterian Church of Grapevine with Dr. Robert S. Crilley and Rev. Nancy Drake officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service. Interment will be at 2:30 PM, Wednesday, at Pecan Grove Cemetery. Family will receive friends at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home during a visitation on Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
