IN LOVING MEMORY

Alyce (Cavitt) Hickman

Oct 30 1918 - Dec 31 2008

Alyce (Cavitt) Hickman was born in Galveston, Texas on October 30, 1918 to Jack L. and Elise (Beauchange) Taylor. She passed away on December 31, 2008 at 90 years young. Alyce graduated from Ursuline Academy of Dallas, Texas in 1934 at the age of 16. As a young woman, she rode horses and competed in Fencing, along with numerous other activities. She married on September 20, 1941 to Edward Starr Hickman who preceded her in death on February 28, 1985. Alyce was a true Southern lady living in New Orleans and in Dallas as a young girl. She loved the South, and thought of herself as a Cajun. She enjoyed knitting, was an avid reader, bird watcher and animal lover. All living creatures were special to her, most of all the many dogs she had nurtured and cared for over the years. She considered her Yorkshire Terrier Sydney her best friend. She was a true historian, had a special interest in Native American history and dearly loved her country. In recent years she played Mah Jong with her friends weekly at the Senior Center in McKinney. Alyce was a sports fan enjoying football in particular her Oklahoma Sooners! She was a member of the Pleasant Hill Demonstration Club and Country Estates Baptist Church in Oklahoma City where she lived most of her life. Throughout the years, she gave of herself to others unconditionally and with enthusiasm. She was a lifelong volunteer beginning in her sons school, then through OU Medical Center from 1968-1981 and finally at the Cowboy Hall of Fame Museum in Oklahoma City from 1981-1999. All who came in contact with Alyce never forgot her. You fell in love with her instantly as she was just as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside. Alyce was full of life and she lived life to its fullest up until her death. Her mind was amazing and full of knowledge which she loved to share with others. Alyce is preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by her son Chris and daughter-in-law Jill of McKinney, Texas along with her four grandchildren, Ashley Coultrup and husband Trevor of Witham, England; Cody, Cole and Clay Hickman of McKinney Texas. Alyce did not know a stranger; therefore she is survived by numerous friends from all over the country, who loved her dearly, along with her best friend Sydney. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 pm on Sunday, January 4, 2009 at Turrentine-Jackson- Morrow Funeral Home in Allen, TX. Visitation will immediately follow the service. A graveside service will be held in Oklahoma City, OK at Arlington Memorial Gardens at 1:00 pm on Wednesday January 7, 2009 with a reception following at Spencers BBQ. Alyce will lie in state Tuesday until 8 pm at Eisenhower Funeral Home in Oklahoma City, OK. Memorials can be made to her favorite charity SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), and mailed to Chris and Jill Hickman, 2220 Bush Drive, Suite 100, McKinney, Texas 75070.
